Date Busyoutai
The Date samurai team revived from ancient times to present-day Sendai. You can see them at Sendai Castle site. They entertain you by talking about Sendai and the Date clan, performing Kata (play), and you can even take pictures with them! They also show up for many events, festivals and TV shows all over the world.

Masamune Date
Masamune was the first Lord and founder of the Date clan in Sendai, and was also known as the “One-eyed Dragon.”He lost his eyesight in his right eye because of smallpox when he was five years old. He had lived through the period of warring states, and then eventually founded what is known today as Sendai. He displayed his many talents in Japanese cultural arts, such as Noh(classical Japanese musical drama), Waka(poetry), and also loved entertaining his guests.

Shigezane Date
Shigezane was the bravest general in the Date clan and Masamune’s cousin.He saved Masamune from danger many times. After the battle of Sekigahara he received Watari area and became the first lord of the Watari-Date family. The caterpillar crest on his helmet symbolizes only going forward and never going back.

Kojuro Kagetsuna Katakura
Kagetsuna was the commander in Date clan. He took care of the young Masamune and served as a military strategist after Masamune grew up. He is recognized for providing wise advice to help Masamune. After the battle of Sekigahara Shiroishi Castle was given to him, and since then, Katakura family has been the lord of the castle for generations.

Tsunenaga was the Date clan’s ambassador. He visited Mexico on a ship San Juan Bautista and also brought Masamune’s letter to the Spanish King and the Pope in Europe. His journey to Rome is still a remarkable historical topic. His baptismal name is Philippo Francisco.

Basho was the most famous haiku poet in the Edo period. In his journal “Oku-no-Hosomichi”(The Narrow Road to the Deep North) he describes his visit to Sendai and Matsushima. His journal is still considered an excellent guide about Miyagi prefecture and Tohoku region.
